Need Advice on Starting Problems

Postby zoomy12 » Fri Jul 30, 2010 6:41 pm

I have a techinichal support question.

I have had my tractor for years now, it is a Yanmar 1610Dand every time I have used it, it has started rights up, no problems and never had an issue, it has been used without problems in all the years I have owned it.

I used it this week for about 1 1/2 hours when the oil pressure light began flashing and the temperature gauge was getting hot but the light was not on, so I parked it to cool it and rest it from working it.

Then the next day when I went to use it it now will not start, it will turn trying to start, the belt will turn the fan, the exhaust will start to kick out and all but it wont kick over the final part to run.

Is there anything anyone can tell me or give advice on for what it going on and why it wont start or what I can do, we dont have any Yanmar places here in Utah or anyone I know if that fixes them, if you can help me with any of this it would be great.

Thanks

Ryan

How about a question or two. Is your oil level full? Was it full at the time of light blinking? Is your radiator and overflow bottle full? Were they at the time of overheating. I am surprised you have a overheating light if you do. Mine just has a gauge. Does your engine turn over about the same speed now as before the incident or at a slower speed? Do you use your compression release? I know this is a lot of questions but might help us to understand a little more. One last question, if you turn it over with the starter now with the compression release pulled will the oil light go out?

Check your Fuel make sure it"s good and your Fuel Filter is clean if you Haven't changed it. A lean condition could have caused it to run hot and now it may be a No Fuel condition. You can loosen the line at the injector. Turn it over and look for fuel. If it's getting fuel then a compression check would be next. That would rule out the 2 must haves good fuel and compression. How long does it take for your Oil light to go out when you first start it up. Or does it even go out ?? If you try to start it with your comp. release when you close it does the motor still spin easy ??

And does it spin fast? If the starter, or more likely the battery, is weak, it might not turn fast enough for the compression to ignite the fuel. But your main concern should be the engine-oil system.

There's nothing unusual about Yanmars so any tractor shop should be able to troubleshoot, and they can get parts here.

It is spinning as fast as it usually did but wont kick in the last part.

We had just put brand new 5 gallons of fuel in a few days before using it and this happened, no filter change but i will be doing that tommorow.

The oil light used to go out each time after start up all the times we have used and ran it, dont know now sich cant start it.

When trying to start with comp. release when I close it does not seem to spin as easy.

My oil level is full, it Was not full at the time of light blinking when i parked it shut it off and checked it? my overflow bottle was between half and full and now it is at full.

Thanks for all the responses, any follow up would be great, i am changing the oil, oil filer, the fuel filter bowl, fuel filter and o-ring, the air filter and the hydraulic/trans oil and will see what that does.

I appreciate all the help, i have never had any trouble running and using it until now so it is really confusing and worrisome.

When you release your compression and it slows down that is somewhat a good sign you have good comp. When you replace the Filter make sure you Bleed the Pump and Fuel Lines. If you put 5Gal. of Fuel in it you was Probly pretty close to empty that would be a good way to suck up all the dirt in the Bottom of the Tank. The Oil Light should go out before you start it. I keep the Decompression on until mine goes out and then release it. I always count how long it takes on a cold start. For mine 6 onethousands to 8 onethousands 4-5 sec if you have a watch all eng. are different. Still sound like a fuel problem.

Did you bleed the fuel system and confirm that fuel was getting to the injectors (as was suggested above)?

How low was the oil when you shut it down? How hot was showing on the gauge, (the light does not come on until about 230*)? so far nothing has been eliminated as a culprit.

Zoomy12,
Please keep us informed as to the final solution. Most of us learn from these posts. I really have to agree with the post about the fuel. Did you go through all the steps after changing the fuel filter?

After all the suggestions and evrything else I bleed everything right upto the top of the engine and i finally did get it to start, it is now starting right up but all of these gauges are not working, I am going to check the fuses first and go from there.

Well it started and ran fine yesterday but with the gauges not working and today I went out to start it, heat it up and check for leaks from all my fluid and filter changes and guess what It would not start again, but the gauges are now working again.

I am not sure what is going on, all new fluids and filters, bled fuel system and all that, then it started ran at 1500 RPM for five minutes then let cool down but gauges did not work, but it started, but today it wont start and gauges are not working.

Any other ideas or suggestions any of you may have please let me know.

Thanks

Does your model have a solenoid fuel shut off valve? Probably not, but the problem with electrical and starting should really be 2 separate issues. If your diesel engine turns over at proper speed it should crank whether gauges work or not unless it has a solenoid valve. If no solenoid valve I would suggest going back through the bleeding process again. http://www.hoyetractor.com/bleed.htm

well, it started again today and had no issues, all gauges working and that, ran for about 1 half hour, i shut it down to park it and then decided to see if it would start right up like it always did before and it would not start even though i just used it.

Crazy huh, its not like it has 1000's of hours of use, it only has 755 hours of use and never done anything like this now it is.

I dont know what else to do.
