1401 stopped moving

Postby david crigger » Sun Jul 25, 2010 9:25 am

My 1401 acts like it is out of gear.It was running just fine until I started messing with the high and low range. It goes in gear and the clutch holds.I checked the transmission fluid and it looks like snot.Would that keep it from moving?" I could use an original seat with the mounting brackets,Can you help? Thanks.

Your description doesn't give me a clear picture but if the shift linkages seem OK I'd change the hyd-trans fluid and clean the internal filter.

Snot's not good, it should be translucent red like your car's tranny fluid. It's very easy to position the Hi/Lo shifter between gears.

I agree with Norm, the high low range might not be engaged. Sometimes you have to let out on the clutch a little as you move the range selector handle, sort of grind the gears a little. Altho fluid change may be in order it will not prohibit a gear transmission from working. Don't think this is original seat. http://www.hoyetractor.com/mm5/merchant ... 1401FENDER

Pretty simple How do you know it not your clutch. It could be the linkage. Engage the PTO does the PTO work. That would rule the clutch out. If it does Jack it up and spin your Drive wheel and try shifting the High/low and gears and should be able to feel them ingage or Hear it engage or Dis engage or make it harder to Spin the tire Etc.

The internal mesh filter (which you clean and put back) is underneath. Find and remove three bolts arranged in a triangle about 1.5" apart. If there's an external spin-on, it's on the other side from the oil filter.

You can change the seat mount and get a replacement anywhere, or get one that's made for the Yanmar mount from any dealer, such as this one. In fact, they're featured on this site.

How does a clutch adjustment cause a tractor to suddenly stop moving?

How Doesn't it ? If the Linkage is set to short It will not engage the pressure plate. Not enough pressure Causing it to slip. Don't have 1401 or evan seen one.Thats just a simple way of preventing it from working. Just how Does HYD. Fluid do it on a Gear Trans.

How does the linkage suddenly become too short, He was messing with the Hi/Lo shifter. Fluid has no effect on a gear trans other than to lube the gears and prevent seizure and wear :? . Why would you think it does  ?

I do agree that when a clutch linkage needs adjusted the symptoms are usuallly that the clutch slowly starts slipping more and more... not usually just all of the sudden it won't move. Either way... glad you got it going again.
