Yanmar 336D Front Axle leaking gear oil

Postby tileguy » Thu Jul 29, 2010 4:43 pm

I rebuilt my Yanmar Tractor 336D front axle housing, but it began to leak gear oil shortly afterward. I was told that I could replace the gear oil with grease for lubrication instead. Can that be done?

This is just an opinion. It might work and someone may have tried it with success, but I don't think it would be advisable. I would suggest replacing whatever seal is leaking. Your talking a gallon or more of grease, don't know how your going to keep the grease in contact with all wearing surfaces in there.

Refill it with gear oil and, as needed, add LUCAS POWER STEERING STOP LEAK. works good, lasts a long time.

Thanks for the help. I did replace all the seals when I rebuilt, but I haven't tried the stop leak. I will definately give that a try. I appreciate your help.

We rebuild a lot of front axles that are packed full of grease. :) The grease just sticks to the walls of the housing and the gears & bearings are sometimes bone dry.

I did replace all the seals when I rebuilt, but I haven't tried the stop leak.

When you replaced the seals did you also replace all of the wear collars? You should not be having leaks after replacing the seals.

I think there's two seals per side. Did you replace both?

Mine is the same way, on my 3810D. I rebuilt the right side and installed all new bearings and the oil and dust seal. I am going by Walmart today to buy some lucas and try it out. I will let you know how it turns out.

I had a massive leak in my rotary cutter output seal, where it had gotten a piece of baling tape wrapped around the shaft and into the seal. After continuing to add about 1/2 qt. of gear oil every use I remembered the Lucas sealer I had put in my Chevy rack-and-pinion a couple of years earlier, and that it was about the consistency of 90wt., I began adding it til the leak quickly stopped. That was about 4 years ago, about 7 years ago on the rack-and-pinion. All is still working good, no leaks.

No, I usually just follow the instructions on the bottle.
